Berkeley Franz, PhD is a medical sociologist and health services researcher whose work aims to increase access to medications for opioid use disorder in underserved communities. Dr. Franz is Professor of Community-based Health at the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Athens, Ohio and Osteopathic Heritage Foundation Ralph S. Licklider, D.O. Endowed Faculty Fellow in Behavioral Health. Her research program assesses how stigma and racial resentment in the U.S. serve as fundamental barriers to health equity and population health improvement. As part of the C-DIAS Fellowship, Dr. Franz is developing and testing implementation strategies, rooted in stigma reduction and social contact, to increase access to medications for opioid use disorder. She currently leads two R34 studies to increase the prescribing of buprenorphine in rural primary care and within safety net hospitals.
